New Vocabulary
You know the interesting phenomenon, when you learn a new vocabulary word — “ubiquitous,” say — and it suddenly starts appearing everywhere? You hear it on the radio, read it in the paper, experience it in conversations around the water cooler. For me, a similar thing is happening right now, but not with words: with opportunity.
Last Wednesday, I put in my notice at work — on very good terms, no bridges burned. I’m going full time freelance, which is exciting and somewhat nerve-wracking all at once. Ultimately, I’m more confident than I am anything else. My wife supports me in this decision, I’ve hedged my bets, and so far things seem to be falling nicely into place.
Community MX has invited me to become a partner, which means I’ll be writing an article for them every two weeks, and also contributing to their support forums. (I’ll still be writing here, too, and contributing to the Adobe forums.)
I was videoing my daughter’s final swim class this afternoon and ran into someone I hadn’t seen for two and a half years. He was another dad, doing the same thing, and we instantly recognized each other from a foster care class we had taken before Meridian was born. He happens to work for a local video production company with access to green screen facilities and other useful tools. Naturally, we exchanged contact information.
I was recently signed to co-author a Flash reference book with my buddy Chris Georgenes (Focal Press publishing company, due out this year or early next).
All these tremendous opportunities! Looking back, I see this as a culmination of a lot of hard work, a bit of luck, and plenty of support from a great number of friends and helpful people.
Thanks! Really, thank you!
And now, let the games begin.…

“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”

var,
Right on! That’s essentially the same sentiment as my tagline, “Luck is the residue of good design.” The preparation part has taken me a long time to accomplish — and really, that up-till-now bit is only one milestone out of several I need to make. We’ll see where I can take this.

Mr. Moore,
You are a gentleman and a saint. (Actually, you’re a gentleman … sometimes.

[…] Awhile ago you wrote about noticing opportunity everywhere you turned. The opportunities were: becoming a partner with Community MX, co-authoring on a Flash reference book, even running into a former acquaintance with a potential fit. As mentioned in the comments of the post, it tied nicely in with your blog’s tagline, “Luck is the residue of good design.” As none of those opportunities could have come about without first putting in the hours to attain the skills necessary, it could also be taken as, “Luck is the residue of hard work”.
